Aromatherapy; The Great Game Changer
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” Anais Nin
There are many cycles of life. Change is inevitable and whether we resist it or go with the flow determines the quality of our experience.
Change offers opportunities for our greatest growth and transformation if we are willing to look at it as a gift.
Perception and perspective are everything. As is being gentle, loving and kind with yourself. In times of major life transitions, you deserve more love not less.
During the challenges that arise, when the past and the future feel dynamically opposed in the present moment, when you feel a sense of disempowerment and disillusion you will also need support.
Aromatherapy or the therapeutic use of plant extracts (essential oils), integrated with massage, emotional stress release techniques, mindfulness and heartfulness can offer this support and give you the tools to help you move beyond any self imposed limitations.
In this way you can break through rather than break down.
There are many emotions which can arise during times of change.
The three big ones fear, sadness and anger can often derail your efforts to flow through with ease and grace.
Essential oils used in aroma-therapeutic care have a beautiful capacity to help you move through challenging emotions to a bigger perspective and the deeper lessons and blessings of any transformative situation.
Essential oils have an affinity with the heart and limbic brain, both important centres for the emotions. They have the ability to quickly change they way you feel, easing the physical, emotional and mental knots of suffering.
From a calmer state of being, you feel better able to move beyond your concerns, feel more grounded and balanced in your body and more sure of yourself.
Realign the Heart and Mind
When challenging situations send you into emotional turmoil, realigning the heart and the mind will free you from any feelings of abandonment, judgement and disappointment and return you to wellbeing.
Realigning the heart and mind requires you to notice and acknowledge the emotions and give your heart the kindness, care and acceptance no one else can or has ever given you.
For example, when fear arises it is not a time to overlook, dismiss or deny it. You can use Jasmine essential oil, the breathe, an essential oil reflection and aromatherapy massage to acknowledge the fear, give your heart and body love and support and look beyond the fear for the deeper meaning.
Once you have established the reason for the fear and calmed your nervous system, you can make empowered decisions for the journey ahead.
Ask yourself what is the useful component of the fear? Could it be your deepest wisdom letting you know that if a particular situation arises you may not be able to meet it consciously and it may impact your emotional, physical and mental wellbeing. In which case you may still push through the situation but can choose to support your nervous system by getting more prepared, trusting yourself and relaxing more.
Alternatively consider could your fear be suggesting that now is not the right time to embark on this situation? In either case, use your fear to promote your wellbeing, don’t leave it unacknowledged.
Facing your fears with love and appreciation for the guidance it brings, will allow you to trust yourself, expect the best and bless the present.
Aromatherapy to Support the Overstimulated Nervous System
When we are adversely triggered by stressors in life, our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, intentions and actions create our perception of the situation and this registers as distress in our nervous system.
We may experience increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, tense muscles, headaches, nausea, pain and inflammation etc.
Aromatherapy addresses the adverse response to change, by incorporating therapeutic essential oils, the breath, mindfulness, compassionate care and gentle massage to calm the nervous system and clear head space.
In the calm, new perspectives of how any situation may be here to help you can be reflected on. Clarity can provide room for creating some new intentions and taking inspired action. This negates the physical, emotional and mental impact of stress.
You can’t necessarily change the situations life puts you in, but you can change your response for your improved wellbeing. This is true self-care.
Emotional Stress Relief Technique
- Pause, Breathe and Hold
Evoke the relaxation response to balance the nervous system. Place one hand on the emotional stress relief points, ie place the flat of your palm across your forehead. Notice where you are feeling the signs of stress in your body. (Do a body Scan). Start some heart centred breathing, ie inhale through your nose for the count of 4 and breathe softly and deeply into your belly. Exhale slowly through your mouth as if blowing a candle, for the count of 6 and direct your attention to the place of tension. Allow your body to relax and release tension. Repeat for 5 – 10 breaths. To start with you may not be able to take a deep “in” breath so try 4-5 short inhales and a longer exhale.
- Welcome all Emotions
Rumi compares being human to a guest house, “Every morning a new arrival, a joy, a depression, a meanness comes as an unexpected visitor.” he suggests to “welcome and entertain them all, even if they are a crowd of sorrows” and to “be grateful for whatever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.” Name the emotion ie. this is fear, anxiety, anger, sadness etc without judgement.
- Be curious; what Message does the Emotion have for you?
What comes to mind when think of the emotion, what are the relevant thoughts and feelings? Ask yourself does it relate to present time or is it a reaction to something you fear will happen in the future? The emotion is real, but the thoughts and feelings associated may not necessarily be true. Question these and see if you can re-frame them with awareness and compassion. What does the opposite of the emotion mean to you?
- Switch on your heart light
Place your hands on your heart and show yourself compassion for your situation. Tell yourself it’s OK. Breathe in the essence of a stress relieving essential oil and direct love, grace and gratitude to your beautiful heart. Oils of choice could include jasmine, grapefruit, neroli, sweet basil, cedarwood.
- Take inspired action
In the stillness, keep breathing, and ask yourself what inspired action you could take to move you beyond the situation and towards your positive expression of the challenging emotion? ie. if you are anxious, what would it take for you to feel calm.
Sit with yourself in the silence and draw your attention to your assets and inner resources until the answer comes.
From a place of stillness and composure, can you come up with a plan of action to move you beyond your concerns? Write down your plan and take the inspired action.
